1.  Understand Why The Altar Worker and Altar Ministry Are Important.

Prayer eases others burdens. (Galatians 6:2)

2. An Altar Worker Should Be Prepared Before They Pray With Others.

Live the life (Romans 12:1-2)

Live with purpose

*An altar worker is representing God.

*An altar worker is representing their church.

Live prepared (2 Timothy 4:2-5)

Be Presentable

*Dress as though you were meeting someone important or for the first time.

*Guys wear nice pants/jeans and a nice shirt (polo/button up, no sandals.

*Women if you are wondering if your clothing is too low or too short… it probably is.

*Use nametags.

*Be aware of your breath.

3. Introduce yourself and learn what their need is.

It can be so awkward (and cold) to immediately begin praying with someone as soon as they come forward or in a prayer room, etc.

Take a minute to introduce yourself, ask what their name is and how you can pray with them.

4.  Pray using (and according to) Gods Word. (1 John 5:14-15)

*Acknowledgement of who Jesus is


“Dear God, I know that I am sinner and that I have sinned against You. Please forgive me of my sins.  I confess Your Son Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.  I give my life to you.  Amen.”

 5.  Provide the person with a Bible and helpful discipleship material.

One of the areas that frustrated me about altar ministry was never having a resource that I really liked and felt confident giving to those I was praying with.  That is why I wrote Understanding God:  Four Things You Need To Know About Him And Realize About Yourself.  I wanted a book that would encourage growth in the new Christian and that would be easy to use for the altar worker.

Understanding God explains four key aspects about God and your relationship with Him: Receiving God, Needing God, Trusting God, & Sharing God. The book is ideal for a new believer or those who are curious about God. Topics discussed in the book include: God’s Love, Forgiveness, Repentance, Faith, Obedience, the role of the Holy Spirit, and Evangelism.

One of my favorite aspects of the book is actually for a practical reason.  The salvation card is a tear out on the last page of the book.  This way all that is needed is a pen and a book.  The altar worker hands the person a pen to provide some basic contact information, tears out the page, and then gives the book and pen to the person they prayed with.  This one page eliminates the issue of fumbling with clipboards and separate cards to fill out.

6.  Know your limitations.

Many people will seek counsel concerning specific areas of their life.

*Encourage them to call the church office if you do not feel comfortable providing counsel in a certain area

*You do not have to know all the answers – remember we are there to pray in agreement with the person

*If a person is contemplating suicide please make a pastor aware immediately

7.  A Few More Guiding Tips

*Pray in pairs if possible

*Men pray with men.  Women pray with women.

*Do not manipulate (God does not need our help, just be obedient and caring)

*Do not leave the altar area to continue praying with a person alone


Praying/speaking in tongues is scriptural and encouraged.  However, if God has given you the gift of tongues what you speak should be understood by those who hear you. (1 Cor. 14:2, 13-14,  16-17, 27-28)

If you pray in a in a prayer language without interpretation it is not helpful to those who are new or uniformed.

If you pray in tongues an interpretation should follow. Praying for others should be a time of agreement and edification. Because of this, praying in tongues will not be productive unless an interpretation is shared. A good “rule of thumb” to use before praying in tongues with another person is: (1)Do you personally know them? (2) Do they pray/believe in tongues themselves?

Leading By Example | Three Traits Of Good Leaders

Leading by example means modeling what you believe.  Below are three traits every good leader should live by to ensure a positive, generational impact is made.

We are living in deceptive times.  Culture is accepting of a world view that is shaped by the assumption that truth is relative.

A problem is created when we assume there is no need for standards – trustworthy leadership cannot be established.

Roger Scuton give good advice concerning this problem:  “When someone says there is no such thing as truth, they are asking you not to believe them. So don’t.”

A lack of standards eliminates leadership.  Without an example I become confined to my own heart rather than to a gauge or compass that can steer me in the right direction.

Consider the condition of society and how it relates to the following two passages.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NIV)  But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

2 Timothy 4:1-5 (NIV)  In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

When we no longer hold ourselves accountable to a standard avoiding sin seemingly is less important.

However, when sin is given way it only leads to more sin and destruction.

There is seemingly no greater area where good leadership is needed than with a child.

The other day, while in the waiting room at the Dr.’s office, there was an magazine article that sparked my interest, Six Things To Say During The “Talk”Having recently had the “talk” with my jr. high age boy, I wanted to see how our discussion compared.

Below are a few quotes from the article, I hope you are sickened by the advice.

“Young people often think good sex is ‘just something that breaks out, that impulsiveness is evidence of authentic feeling’. They may even feel that actively planning to get into someone’s pants is dirty.”

“If your kids do want their first time to “find them,” warn that it could happen when they’re drunk or lack protection.”

“Don’t rush it—but when it happens, use a condom.”

“Whatever you want to watch is your business.”

“…your teen is online, so he’s probably seen hours of porn.”

“Teach them to have a critical eye—to be thoughtful porn consumers…” 

“…make some acknowledgment of homosexuality to show you’re okay with it—and that they should feel the same way.”

Good leadership will direct and influence others towards truth and safety, quite the opposite from the above advice.

Society is essentially saying there is no need for example/leadership because whatever you think or do is ok.

The word example means: a person or way of behaving that is seen as a model that should be followed

The Apostle Paul was a man who took leading by example seriously.

1 Corinthians 11:1 (NIV)  Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

Below are three traits of good leaders that can be drawn from the passages leading up to the above verse.

1 Corinthians 10:23-24 (NIV)  23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

Paul is saying that just because he could do something doesn’t mean he should.

Paul was careful to consider how the conduct of his life could influence those around him.

1.  Good Leaders Care More About How Their Words And Actions Impact Others Than How It Benefits Them.

Considering others is not always our first thought.  It can be difficult to consider how others will feel or will be impacted.

“…few of us realize that it also takes great courage to live uprightly for Christ day in and day out, to walk through the daily grind of this life with unswerving integrity, doing the right things when no one is watching, living by standards, principles, conscience, and convictions 100 percent of the time.”

Be careful from living as if there can be a distinction between private and personal life, or from thinking that there are special circumstances that permit a more relaxed standard.

1 Corinthians 10:30-31 (NIV)  30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?  31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God

2.  Good Leaders Have An Eternal Perspective.

Leaders move you towards something.  Leaders direct you to what is bigger than you or today.

Our time on earth is short, and how we use our time matters.  Will we build our own kingdom or that of King Jesus?

Having an eternal perspective helps you to put things into their proper place.  It makes your earthly pursuits less desirable while reminding that your time on earth is critical.

1 Corinthians 10:32 – 11:1 (NIV)  32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. 1Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

3.  Good Leaders Are Consistent.

The word example in verse one means to imitate.

You can only imitate or copy something with consistent practice.

During baseball season my boys consistently practice fielding ground balls so that they can imitate the same thing during a game.

Football teams practice running routes so that they can imitate the same play when it really matters.

I could never imitate my wife’s signature without first consistently practicing every movement and line.

Small compromises will affect your influence.  Our families, co-workers, schools, friends, neighborhoods need people who are leading by example consistently.

People can not follow half of you.  They either trust you fully or not at all.  Trustworthy leadership is built through consistently practicing what is right and true.

I hope you will use your influence and time to make a lasting impact that positively affects those around you.  You are leading by example, the question is what are you leading others towards?

Five Yes Or No Questions That Reveal Your Leadership Values

Recently I was able to spend the day at Catalyst One Day, an event hosted by Andy Stanley and Craig Groeschel.  This one day event is a series of back to back talks that share the leadership values that they hold to.

It was amazing!

Below are five questions that I have asked myself based upon the leadership values Andy and Craig shared are important to determine what I value the most.

 1.  Do I Value Questions?

Questions can be intimidating.

If you are insecure as a leader you will confuse being asked a question with being questioned.

However, when leadership places value on questions it can lead to problems being solved and finding the right answers.

Great Questions Will…

  • Reveal what you think is important.
  • Remind you of what is important.
  • Reinforce behaviors that support what is important.

An Example:  If a value that your team holds to is “To Make It Better.” a great question to ask that will reinforce the value and move your team toward displaying this value is,

“What Am I Doing To Help Improve Things?”

By asking a question rather than making a statement the team member becomes personally responsible to uphold the value as a leader.

Craft questions that will illuminate leadership values.

Live By The Question, “What Would A Great Leader Do?”  Asking this questions pushes aside what may be easiest or preferred and brings to the surface what could be or should be done.

2.  Are Good Leaders Good At Everything?

Good leaders are not good at everything, and don’t have to be.  For me, this is so freeing!

In 2003 I received my first paid position at a church as a youth pastor. I had no idea what I was doing, (still don’t).  The difference from today and back then is I have an easier time admitting that I don’t know everything.

One area I always struggled in was preparing for summer camp.  The logistics, the games, planning the day, ect.  It just was not my thing.  My wife however LOVES youth summer camps, even to this day.  She could have done an amazing job leading camp in those areas.  I could have (and should have) done what I was best at – while releasing her to do what she was best at…

The problem was I was too insecure.  I thought I had to be good at everything.  That thought did not help me, the youth group, or the church.

The point is, be secure enough to release others to do what they are better at doing than you.

3.  Do I Allow Others To Lead?

This questions falls right in line with the last one but takes it a step further.  Leadership is not as much about position as it is influence.  Good leaders create environments for those around them to influence in both directions, horizontally and vertically.

Honest communication should be able to flow upward.  If not, the point person will lose touch with reality and those who have valuable input to share will eventually find someplace else that will listen to what they have to say.

Below are some of my favorite quotes from Craig Groeschel about the practice of “Leading-Up”:

“The biggest myth about leadership:  You have to be in charge in order to lead.”

“There is a massive difference between thinking critically and being critical.”

“If you are waiting to be handed something significant, you lower the chances of being handed anything at all.”

“If you are the point leader, you need to do everything you can to give opportunities for others to lead up.”

4.  Do Peripheral Matters Pull Me Away From What Is Most Critical To The Mission?

In order to structure your life, family, church, team, events, meetings, schedule, for what is most important you have to know what is.

Once you are aware, or reminded, of what the reason for your team, ministry, etc. is begin to identify the things that pull you away from doing what is most important.

There are details that will pull us away from what is most important to the mission (just think of spiritual disciplines – which are the most mission-critical practices to everything btw).

If we are not careful our teams, ministry, and life will be structured around the peripheral instead of what is mission-critical.

Often times it’s the little things like pressure and expectation from other people that we allow to pull us away from what we know is most important.

Sometimes it is a result of not realizing how important it is to keep the mission/vision central.  It doesn’t take long for the goal to become unclear or forgotten amidst the demands, new ideas, and potential opportunities.

If you are a ministry leader or pastor take a moment and ask yourself, “Do the things that seemingly support the mission or the mission itself get the most air time?” 

Without a clear understanding of how the “things” (whatever they be) support and further the mission/vision, they will probably hinder it.

Keep what is mission-critical front and center and be ok with what is not being peripheral.

 5.  Am I Striving For Independence More Than Accountability?

You have probably heard the saying, “Your talent can take you places but it’s your character that will keep you there.” 

A person of godly character will be intentional about establishing accountability with other people.  Unfortunately, we are all too familiar with great leaders who have fallen, more than likely because they made decisions that crept them closer and closer toward isolation and inaccessibility.

Andy Stanley is such a great communicator and is able to get the point across in short, concise statements.  One of my favorite things that he said about our efforts to be autonomous is that,

“Power is intoxicating.  Intoxicated people do not make good decisions.”

The more we strive for autonomy the further we remove ourselves from admirable traits such as humility, servant-hood, and honesty and the more prone we become to making bad decisions that we end up regretting.

Andy also asked the question, “Are you willing to give people who don’t need anything from you access to you?”

Without honest accountability with people who are outside of your sphere of authority and power you are setting your own trap.

Who is in your life that you can ask to keep you accountable?
